Dry Drowning

A 10 year old boy went to a swimming pool for the first time with his mother. They went home after more than an hour. He felt tired and took a nap. When his mother checked on him, he was unresponsive. She called 911.

The boy died. The cause of death was determined to be dry drowning. Water in the lungs.

As a life guard and trained by the American Red Cross, I had never heard of dry drowning. The condition may have nothing to do with a pool.
